Apple launches $100 million racial justice initiative
In a bid to promote racial equality for people of color with a focus on education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform, Apple is launching a $100 million initiative dubbed “Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative”.
The initiative, which CEO Tim CookCook said will lead to “changes that touch just about everything we do”, will be led by Apple VP Lisa Jackson who in 2009 was named the first African-American EPA Administrator in U.S. history.
“The initiative will challenge the systemic barriers to opportunity and dignity that exists for communities of colour and particular for the black community,” Cook said in a video.
Cook also said the company will expand its recruitment efforts with HBCUs, create a camp for black developers and increase spending with black-owned companies, among others.
