Jamaica thrashes Brazil to emerge first Caribbean nation to make it to knockout stage of World Cup

On Wednesday, the Jamaican “Reggae Girlz” beat the Brazil women’s team to emerge as the first Caribbean nation to secure a slot in the knockout phase of the Women’s World Cup.

Both the men’s or women’s teams have never made it to the knockout stages of a World Cup prior to the 0-0 draw in Melbourne. The historic feat has been attributed to the stellar defending and determination displayed by the Reggae Girlz ensuring their three consecutive clean sheets in the tournament, according to CNN.

Jamaica’s manager Lorne Donaldson who could not hold back the joy dashed to the pitch to celebrate the victory with the players. It came to many including the team as a shock after the whistle signaled the  Jamaican side’s win over Brazil.

This is the first time since 1995 that the Brazil women’s team has been axed out of the World Cup group stage. The Jamaican coach described the victory as the best moment of his life. It came across to him as unbelievable for his side to beat a formidable side like Brazil. He said the remarkable resilience shown by the Reggae Girlz earned them a slot at the knockout stage.

“I tell you what, this is one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life,” Donaldson is quoted by CNN. “I did a cartwheel but I don’t know if it was a good one. I need a cup of beer and I’m good. I’m not a big drinker. I will enjoy,” he said.

Brazil was among the tournament’s favorites and was confident of a win over the Jamaican side. Their exit, therefore, comes as a huge surprise. They journeyed through last year’s Copa American competition without losing a match and were optimistic about replicating the same on the World stage.
