Controversial American rapper Kanye West visited Uganda immediately after a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in which he reiterated his utmost support for the businessman who has been described as racist since he took office.
Kanye, who recently changed his name to Ye, had announced prior to his Trump visit that he will go to “Africa” to finish his forthcoming album – Yandhi – which he plans to release on Black Friday, November 23.
In “feeling the roots”, Kanye trooped to the Chobe Safari Lodge in Uganda with his TV star wife, Kim Kardashian, and first child, North West. The Lodge is located in Murchison Falls which lies close to the world’s longest river, River Nile.
While recording in a makeshift studio built in a fully-equipped white dome overlooking the park, Kanye live-streamed some sessions on Twitter as he danced to some African songs in the company of some Ugandan artists.
The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, an admirer of Trump tweeted on Monday pictures of a meeting he had with Kanye and Kim Kardashian who visited him at the presidential villa in the presence of his daughter Diana Museveni Kamuntu.
“I welcome American entertainment stars Kanye West and @KimKardashian to Uganda. I held fruitful discussions with the duo on how to promote Uganda’s tourism and the arts. I thank Kanye for the gift of white sneakers. Enjoy your time in Uganda. It is the true Pearl of Africa,” he said.
Kanye West offered him a white pair of his signature Yeezy Boost shoes while Museveni offered the couple a signed copy of his book, Sowing the Mustard Seed: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Uganda.
In January, following a public outcry after Trump described African nations as “shithole countries”, Museveni raised eyebrows when he openly declared his love for the successor of America’s first black president.
“America has got one of the best presidents ever, Mr Trump. I love Trump because he tells the Africans frankly … the Africans need to solve their problems, they need to be strong. In the world, you cannot survive if you are weak. It is the fault of the Africans that they are weak … why can’t we make Africa strong?” Museveni said to a laughing audience during the opening of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Museveni’s comments were a contrast of the African Union and several African countries’ statements calling on Trump to retract and apologise for the remark which he had denied ever making.
The 74-year-old Ugandan leader has been in office since 1986 since Kanye West was 9 years old. The Ugandan parliament recently changed the constitution to allow Museveni to stand for another election despite surpassing the age limit for presidents.
Meanwhile, Kanye West has shown love for Uganda as he recorded several live videos on Twitter with one of them showing him draped in the Ugandan flag.
