A couple in Kisumu, Kenya have named their son, Donald Trump, after popular businessman and current president-elect of the United States. According to the Nation, Felix Otieno and his wife Lorna Akoth said they chose to name their baby after Trump because they liked and admired the former reality show star’s principles. The couple’s decision has however been met with criticism from other locals, who largely supported Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Trump’s use of coarse language in speeches filled with racial undertones and his strong anti-immigrant rhetoric did little to endear him to many Africans.
In addition, President Barack Obama traces his paternal roots to a village in western Kenya and many Kenyans have come to think of him as one of their own, so it was only natural for them to support Clinton.
Little Donald Trump, who is now three months old, was born in August. His parents chose his name even before Trump proved nearly every political pundit wrong by winning the bid for the White House. The parents say that their decision was based on their love for the man whom they believe they share common values with.
Despite the overwhelming popularity and support Clinton enjoys in Africa, U.S. President-elect Trump also enjoys quite a following, mostly from traditional hardliners and religious conservatives who have been at odds with the Obama administration’s decision to champion the LGBT community, women’s right to choose, and the government’s handling of the 2011 uprising in Libya.
