Professor Wangari Maathai
Born in April 1940 in Tetu, Nyeri County, the late Professor Wangari Muta Maathai is remembered for her extraordinary commitment to protecting the environment and fighting for equal rights for all. She was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace. She’s also the founder of the Green Belt Movement, a non-profit organization focusing on women’s rights and environmental conservation. Maathai died in September 2011.
