Hospital Considers Selling Unclaimed Dead Bodies in Uganda

Health officials of Uganda’s Moroto Regional Referral Hospital are contemplating selling off unclaimed dead bodies to the country’s research, training institutions, and universities due to the disturbing rate that families are reportedly abandoning the bodies of their relatives at the hospital.

As it stands now, Moroto Hospital has been placed on red alert due to the stench from the bodies, which are reportedly posing a serious health hazard to patients who have been deserting wards to seek shelter under trees outside the hospital to escape the ravaging stench.

Consequently, the Daily Monitor reports that the hospital is carrying out a post-mortem on various accident victims since June since doctors say the mortuary is currently filled beyond capacity.

“If we only get a fridge, we shall keep those bodies and we sell them to universities for their students’ practical lessons. This will help us keep our mortuary clean,” Director of the Moroto Regional Referral Hospital Dr. Filbert Nyeko revealed.

Most recently, the municipal council in the region has been blamed for the lack of cooperation over the decent burial of such undisclosed dead bodies.

Dr. Nyeko claims that authorities at the hospital are planning on meeting with stake holders over the best ways to dispose of their bodies, especially since the hospital currently has no available cemetery for the mass burial of these unclaimed bodies.
