Authorities in Indiana said a 32-year-old mother was shot and killed just days after she buried her 5-year-old son, who was also fatally shot. “I don’t know if I have any tears left,” South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski told WSBT.
Police said Kaylynn Davidson was gunned down after she got into a fight outside a restaurant on May 17. The deceased mother lost her life just days after she buried her son Kyler Jackson. That was on May 12. Authorities said Kyler’s 9-year-old cousin accidentally shot him.
“You have the Davidson family now that’s doubly affected, that’s still reeling from a five-year-old being killed and now we have this on top of it all. I can’t even imagine or fathom what that family is going to have to contend with from here on out.”
Though police said Kyler was accidentally shot, they did not fully disclose how the fatal incident occurred, South Bend Tribune reported. The family’s attorney, Hamid Saahir, however, told the news outlet that the 5-year-old “died from an unfortunate circumstance involving children with access to handguns.” Saahir did not talk about how the children got access to the weapon.
And to make matters worse, Kyler’s mom was fatally shot less than a week after his burial. Court documents stated Davidson got into a physical altercation with another woman at a restaurant on May 17, and “multiple people” had to step in to break up the fight.
During the altercation, the other woman, identified as 26-year-old Kimarie Wright, allegedly drew a gun and shot Davidson multiple times before going back into the restaurant. Davidson later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
Although surveillance footage reportedly showed Davidson appearing to hit Wright prior to the shooting, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office said that did not justify the suspect’s use of deadly force.
“While the evidence suggests that the victim may have engaged in a physical altercation with the defendant, due to the lack of imminent threat toward Wright or a third person, the prosecutor’s office did not find that the homicide was justifiable,” prosecutors said.
Wright has since been charged with murder and manslaughter.
