Namibia President Hifikepunye Pohamba has expressed his sorrow for the continued division of Cyprus and his country’s support for a solution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN resolutions and international law.
Pohamba was speaking during an event after new Cyprus High Commissioner to Namibia Petros Nakouzi, who is based in South Africa, had presented him with his credentials, an official press release issued here, on Monday, says.
Pohamba and Nakouzi spoke of the excellent relations between the two countries and their wish to further enhance bilateral relations in all areas. The Cyprus issue was also discussed, the press release says, adding that “President Pohamba expressed his sorrow for the continued division of Cyprus and stressed his country’s support for a solution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN resolutions and the rules of international law”.
On his part the Cypriot High Commissioner conveyed the Cyprus President’s greetings and congratulated Pohamba on the economic and social growth of Namibia.
During his visit to Namibia the High Commissioner had the opportunity to meet with House of Representatives President Theo Ben Guriras, governing party SWAPO leader Nanglol Mbumba during dinners hosted by Cyprus’ Honorary Consul Savvas Savva.
He also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Protocol Director Mbapeua Muvangua.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
Repeated rounds of talks, under UN auspices, have so far yielded no concrete result in the direction of a political settlement that would reunite the country under a federal roof, as stipulated by UN resolutions.
A new round of talks is expected to start this autumn.
