The new Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley has announced at her swearing-in ceremony on Sunday that 10% of salaries of her government officials including ministers and parliamentarians will go to charity.
The 10% is a salary raise for government officials initiated in 2016 by the previous administration which Mottley believes is unfair until “the public servants of Barbados receive their due” as public servants have not received a raise due to economic hardship.
“I will ask this BLP Team 2018 to continue to share in the sacrifices being made by our public servants and other sectors of this society. Consequently, I shall similarly recommend to my colleagues, a continued commitment that that 10 percent will not be accepted,” she said.
Mottley also stated that Cabinet staff would be required to declare their assets.
Mia Motley was elected last week as the first female prime minister of the Caribbean Island of Barbados. She was on Friday sworn in as the eighth prime minister and the fifth female head of state in the English-speaking Caribbean.
She comes from a family of political leaders and was the island’s first female attorney-general.
