In an attempt to combat this, a Nigerian anti-trafficking agency called iReport recently unveiled an app that allows individuals to report cases of human trafficking.
The app allows easy access in contacting law enforcement in suspected cases of human trafficking, reports the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
Director General of NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli stated, Traffickers are “inhuman and barbaric,” she also added that when they are caught, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The International Organization for Migration estimated that 11,000 women and 3,000 children arrived in Italy in 2016. They made their voyage by sea. Women and girls especially are at risk of being sexually exploited.
In June, NAPTIP officials were able to stop 10 children from being smuggled out of Nigeria. They were en route to Russia for the World Cup.
