Outrage as Golden Globes snub Ava DuVernay’s ‘When They See Us’

It came as a surprise to many that Netflix miniseries When They See Us failed to get a nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes were announced Monday.

Arguably one of the stand-out projects to be released this year, the four-part series was widely expected to earn a few nominations. Surprisingly, the series’ lead actor, Jharrel Jerome, who historically won an Emmy award for his role and was expected to earn a nod was also snubbed.

With a mixed feeling of disappointment and outrage, screen lovers took to social media to register their displeasure. Among them was actress Aurora Perrineau, who featured in the series as the character, Tanya.

“When they see us being snubbed by the Golden Globes is consistent with the way people can’t talk about our stories,” she Tweeted. “It was “too hard to watch”yet it is our reality. Proud of @ava and the Exonerated 5. Never stop telling our stories. Onward and upward!”

The series’ Director, Ava DuVernay, however, seemed unperturbed and gave a very classy response to the snub while addressing a fan on Twitter.

“These things are a cherry on top. The sundae is yummy with or without it. And this one has been particularly delicious,” she partly tweeted.

Take a look at some other reactions below:

Based on a true-life story, When They See Us chronicles the ordeal and nightmare five teenage boys from Harlem had to go through after they were falsely accused of brutally assaulting and raping a white female in the famous 1989 Central Park Jogger case.

Known as the Central Park Five, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise – served between six and 13 years in prison. They were later exonerated in 2002 when rapist Matias Reyes confessed to the attack, with DNA evidence supporting his claim.

The series, after its May 31 release became the most-watched series on Netflix for a consecutive number of days.

Other notable black actors who were expected to earn nominations but were snubbed include Lupita Nyong’o (Us), Regina King (Watchmen) and Zendaya (Euphoria).
