Pupils tied to the cross and flogged for lateness in Nigeria

Arriving late to the Metorite Standard School, Ayetoro in Ogun state in Nigeria earns pupils a ‘barbaric’ punishment: being tied on a cross and flogged.

The pupils, a boy and a girl, had arrived at school late on Wednesday only to be tied to a makeshift crucifix with a green string and flogged with a horsewhip.

A policeman stumbled on the weird punishment and tried to intervene only to be attacked by the school proprietor called Afolayan Joseph and the headteacher.

“I was going to work this morning (Wednesday) when I saw some cars parked by the roadside. I discovered that it was because of some pupils that were tied to crosses. When I saw it, I parked and went to meet the proprietor of the school. I introduced myself as a policeman and told him to untie the pupils. He refused, saying there was nothing anybody could tell him that would make him release them,” the policeman identified as Livinus said. to Punch Newspaper.

He then called the Divisional Police Officer of the area to report the incident.

The proprietor and headteacher have been arrested.

Police Public Relations Officer ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the arrest, including that of another teacher from the same school.

“It is a barbaric incident because I don’t see any offence that a secondary school pupil will commit that will make someone tie him or her and be flogging them in public. They have been arrested and will be taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department,” he said.
