Rising Ghanaian pop star Ebony dies in car crash at age 20

Ghanaian music star Ebony Reigns, real name Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, has died in a car crash on Thursday night in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The rising dancehall and Afrobeats artist was returning from Sunyani, the capital of the Brong Ahafo Region when her car crashed into a bus killing her, a friend and a security man. Her driver is reported to be unconscious.

The 20-year-old artist’s death was confirmed by the Divisional Commander of Mankranso, DSP John Adusei who told local radio Citi FM that her “Jeep collided with the bus at the intersection of the road between the Nsuta and Bechem junction”.

“Three of them passed on, even the driver. Now the bodies are at Mankranso. We have a morgue here so we have deposited the bodies over here,” he added.

Ebony rose to fame after her first single, “Dancefloor“, in December 2015 released by Rufftown Records. The song was nominated for the unsung category award at the 2016 Ghana Music Awards. She was consistent with hit singles including “Kupe” in 2016.

2017 was Ebony’s breakthrough after releasing “Poison”, “Date Your Fada”, “Sponsor” and “Maame Hw3” which addressed the domestic violence problem in the country.

The talented singer ended the year with the gospel song “Aseda” which caused a stir due to her controversial “bad girl” image on and off stage.

Ebony has won many awards including the Artiste of the Year at the 2017 Bass Awards and Best Female Video and New Discovery at the 2017 4syte Music Video Awards.
