This weekend Kersley Appou of Mauritius became the oldest African national team footballer beating Cameroon legend Roger Milla (pictured). Appou came on as a substitute at the end of a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Mauritania at 43 years and 354 days.
Milla held the record since 1994 when he scored in a 6-1 defeat against Russia in the World Cup at the age of 42 years and 39 days. He may have lost this record, however he still holds the record as the oldest player and goal scorer at a World Cup.
According to BBC, “Milla played in three World Cups, and was one of the stars of the 1990 finals at the age of 38 after coming out of retirement to lead Cameroon to the quarter-finals. His goal celebration of dancing around a corner flag has become iconic.”
“I was glad to play,” Appou told AFP after his country lost the first leg of a first round tie 1-0 in Mauritanian capital Nouakchott. “I plan to continue playing.”
