Send Your Kids to Africa for the Summer

African Genesis Institute

The African Genesis Institute bills itself as a “school without walls” that specializes in “corrective education” for African American and Latino youth. This program grew out of an African-American youth organization called The d’Zert Club. After more than a decade of producing special events and cultural programs for youth and families in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the husband and wife team of Ali and Helen McCrary Salahuddin expanded their vision to develop the institute.

Children ages 7-14 from around the United States are enrolled in a 27-month enrichment program designed to teach them things about African heritage that are usually left out of school curriculums, both public and private.

After eight weekend classes and four domestic field trips, each student who successfully completes the African Genesis Institute – and keeps a C average or better in regular classes – is eligible for a free trip to Africa. In years past, students have danced in Ghana and toured the great pyramids at Giza. This year’s group will visit Senegal and Gambia. Adults can also earn a free trip by signing up as group leaders for the Institute.
