Tubman rescued 300 people in 19 trips
Biographer Sarah Bradford wrote that Tubman freed more than 300 people in 19 trips, a claim that can be found on various monuments and plaques. However, Tubman’s rescue missions, which undoubtedly helped changed America, were more limited. According to a report by Harriet Tubman Biography, Tubman rescued about 70 people, including family and friends during 13 trips to Maryland, not 19 trips.
The report adds that Tubman repeatedly made it known to people at public and private meetings during 1858 and 1859 that she had rescued 50 to 60 people in eight or nine trips. Then came her last mission in December 1860, where she rescued seven people. “We can name practically every person Tubman helped. In addition to the family and friends, Tubman also gave instruction to another 70 or so freedom seekers from the Eastern Shore who found their way to freedom on their own,” the report said.
