Seven myths about Harriet Tubman you should know

Tubman started Underground Railroad and rescued people from all over the south

Tubman did not start the Underground Railroad as the network to help free slaves was already established when she joined. The network had little-known but key figures like William Still and Pastor Samuel Green who risked their own freedom to assist fugitive slaves. Records, however, show that Tubman did make the network “stronger and more effective.” And her Underground Railroad rescue missions did not go all the way to the south as some claim. The report by Harriet Tubman Biography says she returned only to Maryland to bring away family and friends as going to other places where she did not know the people or the landscape was not safe.
