The incredible life of the business manager at JPMorgan Chase who doubles as an army captain

Captain Vincent Wright is a United States Army reservist who is also a Business Operations Manager with JPMorgan Chase. He joined the prestigious financial firm in 2015 as a member of the Military Officer Executive Development Program (MOEDP).

Prior to joining JPMorgan Chase, the army officer held several leadership roles in the military. For instance, he has held leadership roles in transportation and logistics management. While in Iraq, he was responsible for providing convoy security in conflict areas.

Since joining JPMorgan, Wright has risen among his colleagues to manage the ATM Monitoring Group. “The skills I learned in the Army gave me the confidence to pursue my current role at Chase, and now my experience at Chase is helping me be a better leader in the Army Reserves,” he told JPMorgan News.

Wright attributes his career mobility to his goal of making life easier for his manager and anticipating what he or she wants. In other words, his goal is to make it difficult for his boss to do his or her job without him. Also, Wright is big on networking.

“Networking for me is about learning, not about finding my next opportunity. I also have a few mentors at the firm that I speak with on a recurring base, and they always give me good advice. My relationships with my mentors formed naturally and I think that’s the best way to do it. Don’t try to force it,” he said.

According to him, in the military, it was very easy for him to tell who was in charge at any moment and who had the final say in crucial decisions. However, in the business world, he has come to understand the significance of collaboration and influencing.

“On the flip side, the military contributed a lot to my career mobility as it does a good job of teaching service members how to see the bigger picture and how to learn from past mistakes. I use both of these skills every day, especially the latter,” he added.

Wright describes his first month at JPMorgan Chase after transitioning from the army as overwhelming. According to him, he left a field he was an expert in and ventured into a field he knew absolutely nothing about.

“What got me through was speaking with others who made the same transition. Listening to their stories made me realize that I was normal and better days were ahead. I believe having strong relationships with people you trust will help you get through pretty much anything,” he said.
