These 7 African countries have the world’s highest level of displaced people

Compared to 2018 reports, the total number of internally displaced people on the global scale this year has increased by a huge margin and sets the record as the highest ever.

All eyes seem to be on Africa as the continent not only recorded more than 80 per cent of the total number of displaced people, but it also leads with 7 countries in the top ten chart recording over 7.1 million people out of the total 9.3 million displaced people.

The Global Report on Internal Displacement 2019 (GRID 2019) released by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre indicates that new internal displacements associated with conflict and disasters across 148 countries and territories were recorded in 2018, with nine countries each accounting for more than a million.

Globally, while 10.8 million people are displaced due to violence, 17.2 million people are displaced due to natural disasters. Ethiopia comes in at number one with the world’s most internally displaced people peaking at 2.2 million people.
