Every November 2, the world observes the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. It was set aside to highlight low or non-existent conviction rates for crimes against journalists.
To observe the Committee to Protect Journalist released their annual impunity index, which highlights the status of journalists in the world since 2008. It has focused on the murders of journalists that have not be solved between September 2008 and August 2018.
According to the index, impunities are entrenched in 14 countries in the world and at least 324 journalists have been killed in the past decade. Eighty-five per cent of these murders has not been solved.
Further, most of the cases have happened in 14 countries, most of which have been featured on the index a number of times.
Among the 14 countries are three African nations which have not solved the murder of journalists, many of who are local reporters.
