Umoja Women’s Society
The Umoja society exists in Kenya and dates back to the 1980s and provided a haven for women. Founded by Rebecca Lolosoli, the Umoja society is often referred to as No Man’s Land. It offers a home to women in traditional societies who stand against cultural practices that demean the existence of women in society. Many of these women chose to exile themselves from societies where women are not treated equally to men. The society also empowers women to fend for themselves and live together in unity not as rivals but as supporters who rise by lifting other women. The Umoja society has developed into a village in Kenya among the Samburu women and has inspired many other villages to set up the women-only villages that have begun to prosper.
