On July 1, 2019, a rare piece of memorabilia which served as the prison identity for legendary American rapper, Tupac Shakur, could be yours to own. The late rapper’s 1995 I.D. card is being listed with Heritage Auctions, 24 years after he went into prison over a sexual abuse sentence that was slapped on him at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.
Tupac, who died at the age of 25 in 1996, served only nine months of the four and a half years sentence but today, the mugshot ID displaying his details including eye color, date of birth, weight and his signature, will be auctioned at a starting price of $2000.
The date listed on the inmate I.D card is Feb. 28, 1995 – two weeks after Shakur began his prison sentence on Valentine’s Day and the Heritage auction house expects it to sell for between $4,000 to $6,000.
Behind the card, it notes that Shakur was required to carry the I.D. card with him “at all times” while in the facility.
Opinions in the media are split on whether or not it should be sold at all. This will follow a recent attempt to auction a letter he wrote to Madonna which was appealed to be blocked for sale by the pop star – to no avail.
The mysterious gunning down of Tupac on the streets of Las Vegas in a drive-by shooting incident on Sept. 7, 1996, was revealed to have been prompted by “gang retaliation” against Suge Knight more than 21 years later in September 2017.
