Threads by Dreads Foundation Offers Scholarships to 10 Students

The intelligent but unassuming Ghanaian entrepreneur Christiana Afotey is the brain behind Threads by Dreads, an ethnic fashion brand that retails high-quality clothing and furniture accessories made from authentic Ghanaian fabric all over the world, and she has recently launched a scholarship to promote education.

According to Afotey, Threads by Dreads seeks to promote the culture and beauty of her native Ghana by harnessing the craftsmanship of a group of skilled and professional Ghanaian artisans and delivering their works to several countries around the world.

Afotey’s passion for Ghanaian culture is only surpassed by her desire to give back to society. Consequently, in April, Threads by Dreads Foundation was launched with a mission to “empower exemplary scholars into pioneering leaders of tomorrow.”

The foundation is currently offering scholarships to high school scholars in Ghana in order to sponsor each of the winning candidates’ tuition costs for any university, vocational, or trade school in Ghana.

Afotey established the scholarship in honor of her mother, Mrs. Fedelia Adokailey Mensah, to continue her legacy of nurturing, community building, and re-investment in the lives of future generations.

The first edition of the scholarship is offering 10 qualified candidates the Mrs. Fedelia Adokailey Mensah Scholarship Award. Each award has a value of $250 or about 1,000 cedis. The scholarship, which will be paid directly to the school, is meant to cover all or part of a scholar’s tuition fees, feeding, school supplies/materials, and any other educational program that benefits the student.

To qualify for the scholarship, scholars must:

  1. Actively enroll in school with no more than five occurrences of lateness/unexcused absences
  2. Maintain A’s and B’s throughout the calendar school year (GPA of 3.0 and above)
  3. Have a minimum of 40 hours on a volunteer log
  4. Have no outstanding tuition balances
  5. Be a resident of Ghana

To apply for the scholarship, interested candidates should download the application form. All completed entries must be submitted no later than December 31. Successful candidates will be notified during a surprise visit to their classrooms in March of 2017.
