Ugandan actor in ‘Get Out’ nabs first Golden Globe nomination

British-Ugandan actor and writer Daniel Kaluuya has been nominated for the 75th Golden Globe Awards for his Chris Washington role in the American horror movie “Get Out” premiered in February 2017.

This is a big deal for the young actor who made a mark on the big screen barely ten years ago in movies such as Johnny English Reborn, Kick-Ass 2 and Sicario.

Kaluuya’s nomination for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy is his debut for one of Hollywood’s prestigious awards.

To win the Golden Globe, he has to beat Steve Carell, Ansel Elgort, James Franco and Hugh Jackman in the category which is strangely not linked to the $4.5 million budget horror movie directed by Jordan Peele.

Get Out was also nominated for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category and it’s described as a likely contender for the award.

Released by Universal Pictures in February 2017, the movie earned good reviews from the National Board of Review and American Film Institute. It grossed $254 million worldwide.

Daniel Kaluuya’s nomination adds him to the list of several actors of African origin who had been nominated or had won a Golden Globe award. They include Lupita Nyongo’o, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uzo Aduba, Djimon Hounsou, David Oyelowo and Barkhad Abdi.

Who is Daniel Kaluuya?

Daniel Kaluuya was born in London in the United Kingdom on May 8, 1989 to Ugandan immigrant parents. The actor and writer studied in London and started his career in 2006 when he featured as Reece in the BBC drama “Shoot the Messenger”.

He featured in over a dozen series before playing the lead role in Daniel Mulloy’s “Baby” in 2011. He later appeared as Special Agent Tucker in Johnny English Reborn, Juka in Welcome to the Punch, FBI agent Reggie Wayne in Sicario and Black Death in Kick-Ass 2. He will also appear in the 2018 Marvel Studios film Black Panther, portraying W’Kabi.

He has won several awards including the Screen International Magazine’s UK Star of Tomorrow in 2009, the Evening Standard Award and Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer in 2010 among others.

Daniel Kaluuya has been nominated for the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor, MTV Movie & TV Award for Next Generation, National Board of Review Award for Best Cast and the Golden Globe Awards for the movie “Get Out” among many others.
