Nigerian rapper Falz, also known as Folarin Falana, unveiled the video of This is Nigeria, a remake of Childish Gambino’s viral video, This is America.
This is Nigeria tackles the social ills in Nigeria, highlighting aspects such as corruption, crime and exploitation.
The song sets off with Falz’s lawyer and activist father, Femi Falana, explaining the consequence of these vices to the people of Nigeria.
Listening to the song, one can’t help but sing along to the lyrics: “This is Nigeria, look how I’m living now, look how I’m living now. Everybody be criminal.”
Another thing that stands out is the representation of Chibok girls, a jab at the government for its slow and delayed response to their kidnapping and that of many girls by Boko Haram.
He also makes a reference to Buhari’s gaffe for calling the youth lazy.
Falz further tackles the current affairs, including insecurity, sexual assault in churches, how a clerk said a snake swallowed stolen money, the cough syrup addiction and how society has allowed thieves and politicians to contest for public office.
The musician has come under criticism over the video, with many fans saying he had copied Childish’s video. He came out to explain the issue, saying it is a remake with various messages that all Nigerians must take to make their lives better.
