Five years ago, Dr. Dre proclaimed himself the first-ever hip-hop billionaire but many have questioned and even investigated to prove that his assertion was/is not true. In the wake of Apple’s $3 billion 2014 purchase of his Beats By Dr. Dre headphone line, he owned an estimated 20%-25% of the company at the time; of the $2.6 billion Apple paid upfront in cash, another $295 million was allocated to cover debt payments, leaving Dre with a little over $500 million, Forbes writes.
Today, Dr. Dre’s net worth of $800 million edges him well ahead of all hip-hop artists as he braces up to compete with Jay-Z.
