August 28 is one of the most historic dates in American history. It marks the end of the slavery in 1833; the death of Emmet Till in 1955; Motown’s first radio play in 1961; the speech of civil rights icon Martin Luther King in 1963; and the party nomination of Barack Obama in 2008.
To mark the day, award-winning director and producer Ava Duvernay released the trailer of a short film she worked on with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture back in 2016. The short film was exclusively shown at the Museum but is now coming to TV.
Called the August 28: A Day in the Life of a People, the short film will debut today on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network.
It stars A-list celebrities including Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, David Oyelowo, Don Cheadle, Regina King, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, André Holland, Michael Ealy and Glynn Turman.
Duvernay had highlighted the significance of the day on a Twitter thread in 2017.
