Mobutu Sese Seko was a Congolese politician and military officer who was president of Zaire from 1965 to 1997. While Lumumba’s rule lasted only three months because of the powers that decided his fate, Sese Seko’s lasted three decades.
When those power brokers in Europe got tired of him, Laurent Kabila with his rebel forces were settled upon to oust him. He fled into exile while Kabila himself an inglorious lot renamed the county to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mobutu died from prostate cancer on September 7, 1997 in Rabat, Morocco aged 66. He left behind impoverished masses yet plundered his nation’s wealth, buying a string of palaces across Europe and stashing billions of dollars in Swiss bank accounts. History remembers Mobutu as having a hand in the capture of Lumumba and subsequent murder.
