El Anatsui
El Anatsui is a Ghana sculptor and a product of the College of Art, University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. After he graduated from the university, Anatsui began teaching at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a Professor of Sculpture and has been there for over four decades. His foray into the art of recycling started with his search for “something that had more relationship to [him], as someone growing up in an African country… [wanting to] draw connections between consumption, waste, and the environment… [because] Art grows out of each particular situation, and… artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws up.”
He is world-renowned and has pieces in some of the most prestigious collections in the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; The British Museum; the Vatican Museum and many more.
