Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, otherwise known as Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti is no longer with us however, she was a force to be reckoned with.
Kuti was a women’s activist, teacher, political campaigner and aristocrat from Nigeria. She was also the mother of famous singer Fela.
Kuti stood by her husband Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti as he defended the rights of commoners in Nigeria. Israel also established the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Nigerian Union of Students in 1931. Kuti was a staunch advocate and fought for the rights of Nigerian market woman and established programs to alleviate literacy issues within market women. Kuti was also an active member of the delegates who negotiated Nigeria’s independence from the British.
