5 controversial African cartoonists who get on politicians’ nerves

Photo: Egypt Today

Doaa Eladl

Egypt’s most popular female cartoonists, Doaa Eladl, has also created some of the most satirical cartoons on politics and religion.

While she hasn’t been censored for her cartoons, she is among the cartoonists who cannot draw cartoons on vital information because of the ‘lack of information’. She says:

No one ever told me what to draw, or banned any of my work. However lately, lack of information is the most catastrophic issue we battle with. Usually when there is any prominent issue, we don’t get any information about it. It is like working in the darkness. There are a lot of topics that we’d like to draw about but can’t because we don’t have enough information.”

The member of Cartoon Movement has also faced numerous threats about her work and even faced charges of blasphemy over a cartoon on the politicisation of religion.
