For most Blacks in America, “jumping the broom” is synonymous with American phrases associated with marriage such as “getting hitched” or “tying the knot.”
With deep roots in the past and described as a ritual passed down through slavery, this African-American marriage custom is still causing controversy among would-be couples, who tend to get confused over whether to jump the broom or not.
The practice, popular among some African-American cultures, usually take place according to this order:
1. Bride and groom complete their vows
2. Minister announces the couple as man and wife
3. Bride and groom kiss
4. Minister summons the broom
5. Witness lays the broom before for the couple
6. Minister provides a song or gives an explanation of the broom ceremony.
7. Bride and groom hold hands to leap together while the guests cheer!
