Stokely “Kwame Ture” Carmichael
Stokely Carmichael was born Stokely Standiford Churchill Carmichael. He was a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a member of the Black Panther Movement as well as a pioneer in the Black Power Movement.
As a Civil Rights Activist, he served as Head of the Black Panther Party from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, he left the United States for a self-imposed exile in Guinea, Africa, changing his name to Kwame Ture. He died of Prostate Cancer in 1998 in Guinea and was buried in the capital city of Conakry.
