Whydah Gally
The Whydah Gally was built as a transporting, cargo, slave ship and later as a pirate ship.
Named after the Kingdom of Whydah, it set out for its first voyage in 1716 traveling through is now known as Benin, Gambia, Senegal and Nigeria carrying 500 slaves, gold including Akan jewelry and ivory.
In February 1717, the ship was overtaken by pirate “Black Sam” Bellamy. The ship was then modified
In April 1717, the ship was wrecked when it came amidst a violent storm.
The remains were found in 1984 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
