Almost $200K raised for Maryland teens who lost their parents in car accident

Two Maryland teenagers who tragically lost their parents in a fiery car crash have been receiving an outpouring of support in the wake of the incident as community members have so far managed to raise nearly $200,000 for them.

According to WUSA9, Prince George’s County police said Kyle and Charlene Savage died in the early hours of Saturday after a car they were traveling in left the road, struck a pole, and subsequently caught fire.

Following the fatal incident, friends, family, and sympathizers have been offering support to the deceased couple’s two sons Knico, 14, and 17-year-old Kyle Jr.

“We know it’s a long journey because we’re devastated,” Charlene’s sister Linda Hunter, said. “But we know God will get us through this because God has a plan. Even though we may not know what His plan was, we know He had prepared us and Charlie’s boys for what’s next.”

Kyle Jr. is in his senior year at DeMatha Catholic High School, and he’ll have his college education at Virginia’s Hampton University. So to ensure his college education is financially covered, family friend Kester Irwin Hanley Crosse set up a Facebook Fundraiser to help raise funds for the 17-year-old.

“They are loved and have a strong loving family,” Cross wrote. “The oldest is graduating from high school in 2 weeks and is attending Hampton in the fall. How fast can we raise $40,000 to cover his college?”

At the time of this report, almost $200,000 had been raised for the brothers. Responding to the support, Hunter told WTTG that she knows the deceased couple is “smiling because they see the people who are reaching out.”

“Coming out just wanting to support the boys and asking what they can do,” she said. She also spoke about how her deceased sister’s sons “were the world to her.”

“They know the love and support they have behind them,” Hunter continued. “Their strength and the courage through this, even more so than some of the adults in the family, has been amazing.”

DeMatha also announced the family “is also working on a Trust Fund” for the brothers and “will share that information when we have it.”
