Art For Africa Exhibit Post Press Release

Artists, Art Connoisseurs, and Friends of Africa joined forces at the Sotheby’s Auction House in NYC on November 17, 2011, for the Art for Africa exhibit. The show was founded by philanthropists Tara and Jessica Getty, and friend, South African contemporary artist, Beezy Bailey and developed by Africa Foundation UK.

In September 2009, the first Art for Africa™ was held at Sotheby’s in London and the proceeds ($701,175) of the sales were used to support orphaned and vulnerable children in South and East Africa.

Some of the artwork featured were “I decline. I refuse to recline” donated by artist Mary Sibande and Gallery MOMO, South Africa, “Off White Incarnation” donated by artist Jeff Sonhouse, “Mummified Barbies” donated by E.V. Day, “EQUAL” donated by Rob Wynne, and “The Great Italian Nude” donated by Kiluanji Kia Henda.

Jake Bright, Director of Cocody Productions, played an outstanding variety of African music throughout the evening while guests mixed, mingled, and enjoyed cocktails.

Dave Matthews, South African–born American musician and occasional actor, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band, was among the many guests who attended the event.
