Makeup Tips: Cheek It Up with Blush

Last week, Face2Face Africa discussed the various types of concealer and foundation and how to select the right shades.

Now class has resumed!

This time we will continue building the face; now that we have the foundation and concealer (a.k.a. the base) applied, today, we will focus on the cheeks!

There’s a myth that woman of color can’t wear blush, and I’m hoping to dispel this myth and get you blushing!

It’s all about creating warmth, using different shades complimenting your complexion, and adding depth. First, let’s discuss the different consistencies of blushes and the application that you can use.

Cream blush can come in a pot or stick form and is best applied with a sponge.

Powder blush, which has staying power, is best applied with a large blush brush.

Liquid-gel stains are best applied with a sponge and are pretty much budge-proof.

Mastering the Blush Stroke…

Most of my clients prefer powder blush, so after the foundation has been applied, I take a fluffy powder blush and start at the apple of their cheeks (the roundest part) and swoosh upward toward the ear.

If I’m contouring using blush, I use a small flat brush to give me more control and still swoosh.

The key to creating killer cheekbones is to contour with two shades of blush.

Hues, Hues and More Hues!..

To eliminate the “clown” look, you have to know the right shades of blush to use so you can make your look healthy and radiant.  Just like foundation, blush comes in various shades.

If you have dark skin…
You need colors that will “pop,” so try plums or bright fuchsia.

If you have medium skin…
Go for a deep golden pink for day and more of an apricot for night.

If you have fair skin…
Go for a peachy blush or soft pinks.

We’d love to see how you “blush,” send your selfies to selfies@f2fafrica and we’ll spotlight a few, and remember to send your beauty questions to rj@renardajoynyc.com.
