Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie took Hillary Clinton to task over starting her Twitter bio with ‘wife’.
“In your Twitter account, the first word that describes you is ‘Wife.’ And then I think it’s ‘Mom,’ and then it’s ‘Grandmother. And when I saw that, I have to confess that I felt just a little bit upset. And then I went and I looked at your husband’s Twitter account, and the first word was not ‘husband,’” Adichie starts.
Chimamanda was interviewing Hillary at a PEN World Voices Festival lecture at the Cooper Union in Manhattan on April 22.
She then asks Hillary if it was her choice to first identify her relation with her husband.
To which Hillary replied.
“When you put it like that, I’m going to change it.”
She further explained that she chose it as a way to indicate that women can celebrate accomplishments in their personal and professional lives as well as their relationships.
“But I think most of us as women in today’s world end up in the middle. Wanting to have relationships, wanting to invest in them, nurture them, but also pursuing our own interests,” Hillary added.
The questions elicited quite a reaction on social media, with many people complaining that Chimamanda is taking her ‘feminism too far’.
Others have agreed with her, stating that women should not be restricted to their roles as wives and mothers.
Just a few days before, Chimamanda came under scrutiny for suggesting Megan Markle should be the head of the Commonwealth.
‘You know who I think should be it; I think Meghan Markle should be Head of the Commonwealth,’ she said praising the elegance of Ms, Markle and the progressive and lovely relationship between her and Prince Harry.
Commonwealth leaders and the Queen have so far backed Prince Charles as the next leader.
