Kenyan Visual Artist Captures Unique Images in Artistic Video

Known for his unique style of putting together provoking images, Kenyan visual artist and film director Daniel Muchina, who works under the pseudo name “Abstract Omega,” has produced a new video, entitled “Dreampod Kill Switch.”

Speaking to Face2Face Africa, Wangechi Ngugi, a renowned Kenyan film producer who works with Abstract Omega, says the thought-provoking video was made from short clips captured during their regular shoots.

“Instead of deleting the footage, we decided to piece the footage together and create a motif,” Wangechi reveals.

Ngugi adds that the idea of creating “Dreampod Kill Switch” wasn’t to send any particular message but to allow the viewer to extract their own meaning from their own subjective understanding and experience.

The unique video clips were shot in different parts of Kenya, including Nairobi, Machakos, and Diani in Mombasa.

“The video was edited from footage accumulated on a hard drive over a period of six months of different shoots,” Wangechi adds.

With his usual distinctive film production technique, Abstract Omega put together a number of video clips in a stimulating black-and-white style that adds to the suspense, allowing him to tap in to the viewer’s imagination.

Young & Talented

Wangechi, an award-winning film producer working with Monsoon Studio, says she hopes to push the boundaries of storytelling through film.

Her recent productions include a short film, entitled “Monsoons Over the Moon,” which was selected as one the best Sci-Fi Moments in Africa in 2015.

The short film, which comes in two parts, is a mythical Kenyan drama based on a post-apocalyptic Nairobi, where a street gang called “the Monsoons” rise up against an autocratic government to liberate youth from oppression.

The film keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as it recounts the struggles of most young Kenyans in the nation’s capital city.

“My motivation for the script was based on my own experiences of living in Nairobi City and witnessing the grim reality that is mostly kept out of the news and swept under the rug. I was compelled with the intention to shine light to this reality,” Abstract Omega said in an earlier interview.

Abstract Omega has also produced other films, including a music video for the song “MBEX3” by Kenyan rappers Amo Kamili and Juke Myster as well as Part 2 of “Monsoons Over the Moon.”
