The story of the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will continue to evoke fond memories and mixed emotions not only because of the avalanche of achievements he recorded in his position as Ghana’s first President and Prime Minister, but also because of his emergence as the ideological leader of a movement for a united Pan-African State.
Among his peers in Africa, he was most charismatic and passionate about the establishment of the United States of Africa. His contribution to the idea of African Personality, eradication of all forms of oppression against the African race and the fight for independence were arguably some of his biggest achievements. But like most African leaders of his era, he also had large chunks of enemies who wanted him dead at all costs. Although he avoided death on a number of occasions, he couldn’t do anything about it when his soul ascended to the heavens this day in 1972.
Today marks 44 years anniversary of that glorious ascension.
