Five factors you must know about the current protests and turmoil in Haiti

An opportunist opposition and an ineffective government

Haiti’s governments, for decades, have under-delivered on the expectations of their people. The earthquake of 2010, more than anything, revealed the inefficacy of the governing structure and the lack of accountability thereof.

The ruling Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (PHTK) and President Joevenel Moise have failed to deliver on 2015’s and 2016’s election promises, most especially in healthcare and energy.

As the Petrocaribe scandal blew up, opposition parties Alternative League for the Progress and Emancipation of Haiti (LAPEH) and Platfòm Pitit Desalin, have added their voices to protests, threatening the government’s popularity before the next elections in 2022.
