On Saturday, more than 8,000 students took the matriculation oath (pictured) at the open amphitheater of the university, making them official students at the University of Buea.
The university is described as “the place to be” in the faculties of arts, agriculture, veterinary medicine, social and management sciences, education, engineering and technology, science, and the college of technology.
The registrar of the university, Prof. Roland Ndip, led the oath as the new students promised to be loyal, honest, committed, and take part in all academic and extracurricular activities at the university.
The vice chancellor of the University of Buea, Prof. Nolova Lyonga, used the event to challenge the new students to be role models in the future and maintain the heritage that exists in the university and also protect government property, since it is a state-sponsored higher institution of learning.
Due to the fact that the university has had several student strikes, a new online system has been created to link students and parents so that parents can participate in the molding of students for a better and brighter future.
Presenting an academic discourse titled, “Human Ethics,” the former Archbishop of Douala Cardinal Christian Tume prescribed moral rectitude, team work, and love as aspects of success and achievement.
Some of the students also used the matriculation event to enlighten all on the dangers of Ebola and measures of prevention.
An ecumenical service was organized for the 51.3 percent male and 48.2 percent female new students at the event.
