Heavily chained together
Before getting on to the ships, slaves were grouped and chained together with big and heavy iron pieces which made it difficult to move. The chaining and shackling process often took a lot of time because these chains had several locks and were extremely heavy. The weight of the chains often killed slaves and made it difficult for movement. If a slave wanted to move, all slaves tied in his line would have to move to reduce the weight of the chains on one person. The chains were then connected to bars in the dungeons to prevent movement. As a form of punishment, slaves were made to run around the ships while chained until they were out of breath or dropped dead.
