Whipping and cruel punishments
Captives were often whipped at the least opportunity in front of other captives to serve as a warning. They were beaten for several reasons including refusal to serve, run errands, sleep with the men or entertain. Captives who rebelled and others that attempted to escape were often beaten to death and thrown into the sea. On other occasions, their bodies were left in the slave cells and dungeons to rot as a warning to the other slaves. Some unlucky slaves had their hair pulled out or shaved with any sharp objects. Some had hot water poured on them or were left naked in the open at night.
