Canadian rapper Drake is no stranger when it comes to staking heavy bets generating millions of dollars. The outcomes of his bets are mixed. He loses some on a bad day and wins some on a good day. But it appears his losses are more than his wins leading to the coinage “Drake Curse,” suggesting that he is a bad omen.
For instance, he placed a $700,000 bet on the bout between American MMA fighter Sean Strickland and South African fighter Dricus “Stillknocks” Du Plessis last month at UFC 297 and suffered a loss.
However, the Drake Curse took a day off at this year’s Super Bowl. He placed a bet for the Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. He placed his bet on the Kansas City Chiefs, causing great worry among the team’s fans the bet would jinx them.
“If I win somebody getting super blessed at the show [tomorrow],” the Grammy winner wrote on his Instagram page.
Their worry was justified as some of the victims of the so-called Drake curse included Serena Williams, boxer Anthony Joshua, the Toronto Raptors, MMA fighter Connor McGregor, the Kentucky Wildcats, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Golden State Warriors, according to Black Enterprise.
As it turned out, Chiefs’ fans had no course to worry since the outcome of the game was exactly what they wanted. It was more like a win-win situation. Reports say he placed a $1.15 million bet that the Chiefs would win. The returns? A staggering $2.3 million.
The Chiefs won in overtime, winning 25-22, which enabled Drake to not only win $2.3 million but also to recoup the loss he made when he placed $700,000 on the bout between American MMA fighter Strickland and South African fighter Du Plessis
Drake even posted of himself watching the game. “Come on Pat, bring it home, man,” he said in one of the videos he posted. “Got ‘em, though. Got ‘em!”
He shared another video sharing his excitement over the result of the game.
