Jamaican man charged with killing British brother who visited Caribbean country for mother’s funeral

Authorities in Jamaica have charged a 38-year-old man in connection with the shooting death of his British brother who had traveled to the Caribbean nation to attend his mother’s funeral. Prior to the fatal incident, the deceased, Michael Brown, was said to be embroiled in a “family feud over his mum’s will”, Face2Face Africa initially reported.

Jamaican authorities had also said they were going to look into whether Brown’s January 19 murder was in connection with the dispute. The fatal incident happened just four days after Brown attended his 74-year-old mother’s funeral.

The accused, identified as Lemone Brown, has since been arrested and charged with his brother’s murder. Police also said Brown’s murder likely stemmed from the alleged family dispute over land and houses, Jamaica Observer reported.

The fatal incident is said to have occurred in Mike Town in the wee hours of January 19. Police said the deceased 48-year-old man was in the bedroom of a home he was constructing when he was fatally shot.

Head of the Manchester police, Superintendent Shane McCalla, told the news outlet that days before the fatal incident, police had stepped in to try and resolve the alleged dispute. Police on Thursday also said, “concentrated evidence led to the arrest and charge of Lemone Brown, whose court date is currently being finalised.”

A resident in the area said that land and property disputes in the Caribbean nation are many, adding that those cases don’t end well sometimes, The Scottish Sun reported at the time of the British man’s murder.

“This young man came over from England to bury his mother and to take care of the house he was building and he will be getting buried himself,” she said. “That is so awful and sad. Coming all this way and you will not be returning.”
