Mrs. Obama Joins Movement, Asks To #BringBackOurGirls

On Wednesday, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama (pictured) sent out a tweet in support of the missing girls of Nigeria.

With a serious but caring disposition, Mrs. Obama tweeted out the following message using the viral hastag #BringBackOurGirls from her official Twitter account @FLOTUS:

Since Mrs. Obama moved in to the White House back in 2009, she has been an enthusiastic supporter of girls, women, and youth. On her trip to Africa last June, she visited an all-girl middle school in Dakar, Martin L. King Jr. Middle School, to encourage them to pursue their education and draw inspiration from her own journey.

In addition, with daughters Malia, 16 (pictured far left), and Sasha (pictured center), 13, who fall in the same age group as the teens who were abducted on April 15th, it is no surprise that the #BringBackOurGirls, #234Girls, #200RosesNg, and #BringThemHome twitter campaigns would hit a personal note with the First Lady.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Obama’s husband, President Barack Obama, offered support to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to facilitate the rescue of the nearly 300 girls who were kidnapped. On Wednesday, the Nigerian police announced a $300,000 reward to anyone who could also assist in the effort.

But a reprieve from bad news was shattered once the news hit later in the afternoon that Boko Haram had struck again: killing at least 150 civilians and police men in yet another village in Borno State.

Even though the students are yet to be located and returned home, Mrs. Obama’s tweet is significant because it brings greater international awareness to these grave incidents. It will be interesting to see if any other first ladies stand with her for the cause.
