The mother of an 18-year-old student, who was declared wanted in connection with a robbery incident on a Chicago train, drove him to the police station to surrender after she recognized photos of him that were shared in the media.
According to CWBChicago, the suspect, identified as Loyola University student Zion Brown, was headed to school when he allegedly robbed a train conductor at gunpoint. The incident occurred on February 15.
And though Brown managed to flee the scene after the incident, prosecutors said his mother drove him to the Calumet City police department to turn himself in later that same day. That was after she recognized the photos authorities shared.
The incident occurred after the train stopped at Van Buren Street Station in Grant Park. The suspect allegedly robbed the train conductor of $110 at gunpoint. Prosecutors said Brown told police he robbed the conductor after he realized he had money on him. The suspect also claimed the weapon he used was a BB gun that he later disposed of in a dumpster after the crime.
During his bail hearing, Brown’s private defense attorney claimed Brown committed the robbery because he was hungry and needed money to buy food before attending his lessons. And leading to Judge Maryam Ahmad’s ruling on the state’s request to keep Brown in custody without bail, his defense attorney urged her to look back on her experiences as a hungry student in college, CWBChicago reported.
But Ahmad dismissed that argument, saying that though she had memories of being a hungry college student, it never crossed her mind to rob someone at gunpoint. She then went ahead to approve the no-bail request from the state.
Brown is scheduled to appear in court again on March 4, per New York Post.
