On Wednesday, February 12, 2014, Peace Islands Institute, a non-profit organization based in Manhattan, hosted its first African panel featuring Sr. Political Officer of the African Union to the UN, Louise Sharene Bailey, Representative of Uganda to the United Nations, Dr. Richard Nduhuura, Permanent Representative of Gambia to the UN, Dr. Mamadou Tangara and Dr. T.A. Elias-Fatile, Senior Counsellor of Permanent Mission of Federal Republic of Nigeria. The panel series is a collaborative project with The Journalist and Writers Foundation sponsored by Benjamin Steakhouse and The Sea Fire Grill in Midtown.
The project titled, “African Solutions to African Problems” supplies an in-depth look into current interstate conflicts, health reforms and socioeconomic policy. Officer Bailey praised the project as a way to “engage the African diplomatic core.”
While discussing interethnic conflicts occurring within African states, Ambassador Tangara revealed, “It is more patriotic to live for your country than to die for your country. So let’s try to live for Africa.”
This project extends existing dialogue positing changes the continent should make in the next decade to overcome poverty, health disparities and political corruption. “The world attention has now turned to Africa because of our resources and economic growth…We Africans don’t want to be left behind in distress,” said Ambassador Nduhuura.
The second African panel will take place on March 19th at 12:00pm at the Peace Islands Institute.
