Nigeria ballet boy stars in Disney+ documentary as trailer showcases his journey to stardom

In June 2020, at the height of the pandemic, 11-year-old Anthony Madu took the world by storm with his ballet dance in the rain. His captivating moves went viral after the dance academy he was in posted it. He subsequently left his family to attend a ballet school in Birmingham, U.K.

Disney+ has unveiled the trailer for a documentary film chronicling Madu’s journey, which has already been selected for the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The documentary, titled “Madu,” is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 29, according to Okay Africa.

The trailer for the documentary film “Madu” provides insight into Madu’s life, but, he takes turns to make a bold statement on public perceptions of ballet as a feminine activity. Madu, who began dancing at the age of 5, is portrayed on the brink of a transformative experience.

The trailer showcases the scenes of Madu leaving his family and community, revealing a sneak peek of the touching bond with his mother.

As he arrives in England, the film captures a contrast in the environment, which signals the start of a new chapter in Madu’s life. The documentary “Madu” delves into the realization that talent alone is insufficient for success in the world of ballet.

The trailer hints at a medical mishap affecting Madu’s dancing, setting the stage for a coming-of-age narrative. As Madu aspires to perform on a grand stage, the film explores the necessity of personal resolve in overcoming challenges.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Matt Ogens and Kachi Benson, the documentary promises a compelling exploration of Madu’s journey in the dance world.
